Interview with Author + Visionary Roanae Kent- Boundaries, Healing, and Breaking Generational Cycles
Feel free to leave us a review 🙂
What happens when a woman finally decides her truth is more important than keeping others comfortable? In this powerful conversation with author and visionary Roanae Kent, we witness the transformation that occurs when silence gives way to authentic storytelling.
Roanae shares the emotional journey behind her newly released book "Her Grace and Grit Anthology," a collection of stories from Black women about fortitude, empowerment, and resilience. With remarkable candor, she explains how years of accepting disrespect and lacking boundaries led to a breaking point—one that ultimately sparked her healing journey and this powerful anthology.
"People started dropping like flies," Roanae reveals, describing what happened when she began setting boundaries and stopped being "a punching bag" for those around her. This raw admission resonates deeply with anyone who has feared the relational consequences of standing in their truth. The ten-month journey from manuscript to published book wasn't just about production timelines but required emotional processing, courage, and healing.
Most powerfully, Roanae identifies her grandchildren as the catalyst for breaking generational cycles. "When I knew I was having grandchildren, that was my actual turning point," she shares, highlighting how healing becomes even more urgent when we consider its impact across generations. Her vulnerability serves as both mirror and roadmap for listeners contemplating their own healing journeys.
Whether you're considering sharing your own story or simply seeking inspiration to set healthier boundaries, this episode delivers both practical wisdom and emotional resonance. Grab your copy of "Her Grace and Grit Anthology" anywhere books are sold, including Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Walmart.com, or visit HerGraceAndGritBook.com to learn more about Rone's upcoming book signings and special book box release.

Speaker 2:Hello, yes, yes, yes, we are back today. So today we're going to do something different. This is Tiffany A Greenhood, your host of Publishing Black Radio Show. Today we are going to talk to one of my amazing clients who has just released her book. Her name is Ronee Kent and is out of California, I believe. I believe it's um San Francisco, california, so we're gonna talk to her today. She is releasing her um has released, because it's already available.
Speaker 2:The name of the book is and this is just not, no, any book, y'all. This is what I talk about all the time anthologies. Okay, so the title is her grace and grit anthology. Okay, authored and visionary Rone Kent. All right, so I am going to bring her on. Rone, are you there? Yes, I'm here, hey, so, yes, yes, the time has come to talk about this amazing masterpiece that you have released. This is Rone's first published book. She is now officially now. She has published journals and things like that, but it's nothing like publishing that book that you released your story in. So, first thing I want to ask you, ronay, is how do you feel literally about all it is?
Speaker 3:I feel relieved. I feel um, at times emotional. Yes, because, I emotional just because I've always been really private, so this is a lot for me to be able to open up and share this story.
Speaker 2:Awesome. I am so glad that you did and I know that this was not easy for you. A lot of times we make it sound so easy when it comes to publishing, because for me it's the production and things like that, but for you it's literally releasing real life incidents and things and and stories that you have been through in real life, like that's a whole different thing. So the first thing I want to ask is take us back to when you first said yes to sharing your story. What shifted you, that made what shifted in you that made us, that made you ready to release the story, because a lot of people talk about it and you know they don't. Um, because of different things, you know, not always fear, but sometimes fear is in there, but just different things because, again, it's not easy. So what shifted in you that made you say you know what I'm doing this and I'm not turning back?
Speaker 3:Well, honestly, I feel like I always wanted to write a book. However, I never was. I never, excuse me, I've never been. I thought I never would be able to do it. However, meeting you when you trained me for the journals and you shared a lot about what you do, I stayed connected to you because I always knew I wanted to write a book.
Speaker 3:Now, coming out with this book was a little different because at the time I met you, things had started to happen in my life. As far as you know, my relationship was kind of on the rocks and you know I have always had problems, but I never thought that the things that I was going through, I never thought that it would actually be happening to me. So some of the things are really unbelievable to people, some things I've never shared, but I feel like I wanted to share it, not to oust anyone or make someone feel less than, but to help someone else who may have been through the same things that I have been through. I went through a lot. I went through a lot and I feel like, for who I am, I feel like I did pretty good with handling the situation. Um, you know. So, yeah, wow.
Speaker 2:So let me just give you all just a tidbit uh into what this um, how this anthology was put together. So it's it's titled Her Grace and Grit Anthology, okay, and it's stories of fortitude, empowerment, you know, inspiring all of those great words, but these are real stories from black women, okay, and Rone is in that group of stories that was shared. Okay, even though it's her book, her chapter is not the first chapter, okay, I believe her chapter is chapter 11, all right, so it's different stories that were compiled together to make up this um masterpiece of transformation and and power and just inspiring other people to not be afraid or do it afraid. You know that's that's a powerful statement. This um really sticks with.
Speaker 2:A lot of women is just doing it afraid Cause a lot of times we are afraid and, um, I know Rone was afraid, but there was something in her like she said that it was just time to just push forward and push through. So oftentimes women suffer in silence. What was the turning, turning point where you realized your story was not just for you but for other women as well? I know you say you wanted to help other women, but past helping them, um, through the book, tell us exactly what results you would like to see in other women's lives um, I would like to see women have boundaries, um, and I would like to see women have boundaries and I would like to see women heal.
Speaker 3:A lot of people don't want to go through the process of healing, so they continue to accept things that they know they shouldn't accept. I was one of those women. You know what I mean. I mean, I would like to see it's funny that you say that because I received a call from somebody close to me. I'm not, you know, I don't want to put nobody's name out there. However, I received a call and I was told that, if I cause I did a about a month or two ago and the podcast was public. So I'm being blamed for a woman standing up for herself, and what I can say is and what I can say is if people are treating people the way they should be supposed to be treated with love and care and kindness then it shouldn't be a problem.
Speaker 3:When you start to have boundaries and the other person who always I mean, you know you go into relationships a lot of times people don't have boundaries, so that becomes the norm for a relationship. But when you start to set boundaries, things start to change. When you start to heal. Things start to change when you start to focus in more on the things you need to work on inside of you. Everything changed I know it did for me.
Speaker 3:The way that I thought about myself, the way that I thought about everybody around me. People started dropping like flies, honestly. People start dropping like flies, honestly, and it was because I was no longer being that person for them. I was no longer being a punching bag. I was no longer being who people thought that they could run over because she's going to do it anyway. You know, I became strong within myself. You know what I mean. I set boundaries for myself. I started to know what I wanted to accept from people and if they couldn't give me that, I wasn't dealing with them anymore. And that was respect I was. I felt like I was never respected.
Speaker 2:This is so powerful I mean, I can still even hear it in your voice Like y'all not about to keep punking me, period, and this is what I tell people. And it kind of boils down to this and this is all I can hear in your words and how you talk about it and boils down to this and this is all I can hear in your words and how you talk about it and even building up confidence, because it allows you, like you said, to build up those boundaries and to just like, become your own, your own protection. You know, because the protection wasn't there and, like you said, if it was there, if people would treat people the way they should be treated, certain family members that we thought we could depend on, or that would be our protection or would be our shield we're not. And so now it's like and then you handling that with whoever reached out. You know, and this is what a lot of, especially women, are so afraid of what this person's going to say, this person going to be mad, this person not going to talk to me, no more.
Speaker 2:And look, you guys got to be like listen, this is my life at the end of the day, and I am so proud of you for taking that stand and just not just keep sitting back and suffering, because what people don't understand is that you're suffering when you continue to just hold it in and hold it in and satisfying other people by holding it in because they don't want to be out. It Number one, but you're suffering. So I am so proud of you for taking that step to your healing, to a new life, a new chapter and people say new chapter all the time, but it's really for real a new chapter when you can sit back and say that you've emptied out. You know what's been holding you back, what's been hurting you, what has been abusing you, what has been and it has nothing to do with the other person, it's simply your truth. So I'm very, very proud of you for that. We are going to take a quick break and we'll be right back.
Speaker 1:What is this that I feel deep inside and it keeps setting my soul afire, whatever it is, whatever it is, whatever it is, whatever it is, whatever it is, whatever it is, whatever it is, it won't let me Hold my peace. What is this Makes folks say I'm acting strange? What is this Makes me want to run on in Jesus' name, whatever it is, whatever it is, whatever it is, whatever it is, whatever it is, whatever it is, it won't let me Hold my feet.
Speaker 2:We are back and, if you are just joining in, we are speaking today with Rone Kent author. Let me rephrase that Author and visionary, rone Kent. She is out of. Did I get it right, rene? Is it San Francisco?
Speaker 3:yeah, okay, san.
Speaker 2:Francisco, california, she is calling from, and we started this journey with this book um, I believe, october 2024. So it's been a journey, it's been changes made, it's been all of that. But when you get to that, but when you get to the release date, when you get to now, it's available everywhere Books are sold. I'm going to say that again, it's available everywhere Books are sold. You can go directly to her website at her grace and grit book dot com, her grace and grit book dot com, and that's everything spelled out lowercase. All right, so the bookie is available on amazon, barnes and nobles. I checked amazon barnes and nobles um walmartcom and booktopiacom, I believe, believe, which is out of Australia. So yeah, so it's still popping up.
Speaker 2:Indieboundorg that's the website you can go to, where you can put in your zip code and it'll show you bookstores where you can go and order the book. If they don't have it in stock, they will definitely be able to order it for you. The book is in global distribution, which means it is available everywhere, anywhere books are sold in the world online. We do not play OK, we are not just publishing books on Amazon. So, anyhow, getting back to this conversation where we have been talking to Rone about just different things that she went through and that you go through, and everybody's journey is different. What I want to let me see I had the question that I wanted to ask you. This is so good and you already answered a whole lot of things. I was going to ask what do you think happens spiritually, mentally and even generationally when women release the shame and speak their stories out loud?
Speaker 3:I think that when you release it, it's a part of your healing and I think that you can move forward. Um, I guess that's where I would say grit came in at um. I was in a depressed state for a while but once I was, you know, um, talking about it with you. Um, you know, at times I would call you in distress, like I just can't do it, you know, um, because I didn't want to feel the pain that I was feeling. But I would say that, you know, just take some time out and in and heal a little. And by healing, sometimes it means sharing your story. By healing it means getting counseling. Healing means taking time, taking walks around the water, like really diving deep into who you are I love it.
Speaker 2:I love it and let me just say this. So I said, we started this journey with this book about 10 months ago, october 2024. And I remember the phone calls. And here's the deal. This is what people don't understand about, you know, entrepreneurship, being a business owner and all that. Let's just talk about the niche that I'm in. I'm in a niche of publishing, so that's not just the production part. What you guys see is the finished product.
Speaker 2:But those phone calls, when she called me because I'm already kind of equipped, because I have my own story and I understand what it's like to not be understood and to people to just kind of like, you know, not want you to release, and just all this crazy stuff I understood that. So when she called me, it was not a shock, it was not like what's she calling me for? No, no, no, no, no. I then guess what? I turned from a publisher to a therapist and I ain't never been to school for therapy.
Speaker 2:But listen, there's a different type of piece that comes with knowing how to deal with things that your author, who is you for the relief, just to reach reassurance, to say it's okay If you need to take time. That's really what took so long for this book is the time for them to get the story out. It is not just putting it on paper or typing it up. It's not that simple. So, with the different emotions that you went through, I definitely remember that. But I was so proud of myself because I understood Everybody doesn't understand that a lot of times when you deal with publishing companies, and especially the big box publishing companies, they don't have time to get in your emotions.
Speaker 2:They just looking at you know, um, timelines, deadlines. You know we need to have this done by this, and this and this need to sound uh-uh. I just say take your time. We ain't got number time, even though we put out a date for the pre-order. We went past that date, but it's okay, we coming, we working on it, our apologies, blah, blah, blah, that part, and so again, I'm very proud of you for making it through all of this. It's not easy. It's not easy. Now. I see you on social media and one thing I know you absolutely love right Is besides, your publisher is your grandchildren and I see the pictures, I see the videos, I see the birthdays.
Speaker 2:I see all that, okay and um. My question is how do you hope your children, your grandchildren and um? We'll remember your courage in sharing this story.
Speaker 3:I honestly hope that my children will understand um why sometimes I'm hard on them and try to make sure that they do the right thing, even as grown adults, because sometimes generational curses go from generation to generation and at some point it has to stop. You know, I'm at a place where, when I knew I was having grandchildren, that was my actual turning point. Like I knew, I had to start doing things different.
Speaker 1:I knew I was doing start doing things different.
Speaker 3:I knew I was doing things the wrong way. Diving deep into my healing, I knew that I was doing things wrong. I knew I made mistakes with my children. I had to suck it up, accept it. But I do want for my grandchildren to live different lives than what I've lived, live different lives than what my children live, and I believe that it can happen. However, to my children, I would like for you guys to listen to me the first time. Take my advice and know that I've been there. You know in so many, on so many different occasions, so you know some of the things that we allow around our children is not okay. You know what I mean, like the smoking, and you know certain things that people do around kids thinking kids not picking up on it, they picking up on everything you do. My mama always told me your kids gonna do what you do, not what you say.
Speaker 2:Absolutely. That's very true. That is very true. Thank you so much for that. We're gonna take a quick break. We'll be right back.
Speaker 1:There is nothing I wouldn't do for you, cause you take me higher, hey, higher. Because you take me higher and higher, there is nowhere I wouldn't go. It's true, lord. Take me higher and higher. Give me more of your glory, yes, more of your spirit. God, I just need more of you, cause I wanna be lost in your presence, yes, I wanna be wrapped in your love. Take me higher, higher, come to my glory. Higher, somebody, lord, come to my home, bless my story and praise that your love is healing the fallen people. Higher higher.
Speaker 2:We are back and today we are chatting with Rone Kent, author and visionary of Her Grace and Grit Anthology. Y'all know I love anthologies, so I'm excited. I was really excited to bring her on today to talk about just the power of releasing her story and, again, you can go and grab the book. It is available everywhere. Books are sold online at Amazon, barnes and Nobles, walmartcom, booktopiacom and a few other places. It's still popping up.
Speaker 2:The book is in global distribution so you will be able to. You can walk into Barnes and Nobles and if they don't have it in stock, they will definitely order for you. You can click on Amazon and order it and you'll have your copy in a few days. So we're really excited. We are also releasing a book box. She does have a book signing coming and those dates. If you um want to go to the website, you can absolutely follow her on social media at Rone Kent. It's Rone Kent, I believe, instagram and Facebook. And, rone, is there anything you want to leave us with today concerning the power of releasing your story or any encouraging words you want to tell our listeners today?
Speaker 3:I just want to tell my listeners thank you, thank you for believing in me, and I want to tell my listeners to set those boundaries and love on yourself. You'll feel much better in the end.
Speaker 2:I love it. I love it Absolutely, love it Again. The website is HerGraceAndGritBookcom and I just want to leave. You know anyone that's listening who have been contemplating and just like procrastinating on releasing a story, like it's going to take time. It's going to be a process. It's going to be healing. It's going to be some crying, it's going to be some you know days where you mad. It's going to be all of that, all of those emotions, but in order to heal, like Renee stated, in order to heal, that's part of the process. It's part of the process and you cannot get past it. There's no escaping it.
Speaker 2:But once you release what needs to come out, what needs to come out now, the new things can come in. That is what we have to remember. If we hold it in, there's no space for the new chapter, there's no space for the, the new voice. Some of you all have voices that need to be heard. I was one of them, right, and I didn't realize how powerful my voice was until I started speaking in front of other people about my struggles, about different things I've been through. So again, rone, you've done amazing. Thank you so much for chatting with us. All the way from San Francisco, california. She took the time out of her busy productive schedule to chat with us about her story and we appreciate you. So, again, people, we will see you next week.
Speaker 1:You have been listening to, published in Black with publishing expert and brand strategist, tiffany A Greenhood. Listen next week for real talk, powerful strategies and much more. Again, we thank you for listening.
